Itapua Beach

Itapua Beach

Itapua is certainly the most famous beach of Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia. In the native dialect of Tupi-Guarani, Itapua means pedra que canta (rock that sings).

It has been celebrated in many songs by some masters of Brazilian music like Dorival Caymmi and Vinicius de Moraes, who was the songwriter of the Girl from Ipanema.

The waters of Itapua are green and calm, protected by rocks which form natural pools. The seas continue onshore with waves of palm trees. It is divided into Farol de Itapua and Sereia. The latter is not good for swimming.

Just like the lyrics of Tarde em Itapua (1) say, it is good “spend an afternoon in Itapua, under the sun of Itapua, listening to sea in Itapua, talk about love in Itapua…”

What to do

Diving in Itapua is very popular and can be done throughout the year. Average water temperature is 26o C (79o F). We recommend visiting “Projeto Tamar Research Center” which researches develops and implements protection and preservation plans for the five turtle species found in Brazil is.

Besides that, the next best thing is to do what the song describes. Take it easy, bask in the sun, get a tan and drink a chilled Guarana (2) or a Caipirinha (3).

Eat and Drink at Itapua

Itapua has several kiosks along the beach with food and drink. So, relax and enjoy Bahia’s way of life.

Whenever going to Salvador, include Itapua in your Brazil travel itineray.

(2) Brazilian soft-drink made of Guarana, a red fruit from the Amazon rich in Caffeine.

(3) Traditional and popular Brazilian drink made of Cachaca (Brazilian liquor produced from Sugar Cane). The most traditional is Caipirinha de Limão (lime), but nowdays you can pretty much drink a Caipirinha of any fruit. It can also be made of Vodka and then it is called Caipiroska and of Rum - Caipirissima.

Tarde em Itapua (lyrics)

Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho

Um velho calção de banho
o dia pra vadiar
Um mar que não tem tamanho
e um arco-íris no ar
Depois, na Praça Caymmi
sentir preguiça no corpo
e numa esteira de vime
beber uma água de coco, é bom
Passar uma tarde em Itapua
ao sol que arde em Itapua
ouvindo o mar de Itapua
falar de amor em Itapua

Enquanto o mar inaugura
um verde novinho em folha
argumentar com doçura
com uma cachaça de rolha
E com olhar esquecido
no encontro de céu e mar
bem devagar ir sentindo
a terra toda rodar, é bom
Passar uma tarde em Itapua
ao sol que arde em Itapua
ouvindo o mar de Itapua
falar de amor em Itapua
  Depois sentir o arrepio
do vento que a noite traz
e o diz-que-diz-que macio
que brota dos coqueirais
E nos espaços serenos
sem ontem nem amanhã
dormir nos braços morenos
da lua de Itapua, é bom
Passar uma tarde em Itapua
ao sol que arde em Itapua
ouvindo o mar de Itapua
falar de amor em Itapua
Passar uma tarde em Itapua
ao sol que arde em Itapua
ouvindo o mar de Itapua
falar de amor em Itapua
